CRY OF THE FAERIE QUEEN
by Dogwood
What angel wakes me from my flow’ry bed?
I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again
Your voice the only thing that keeps me here
Before my bones all disappear
What light thru yonder window breaks?
‘Tis the east, my soul to take
I am the smoke that you grasp with your hands
Unseelie Queen of distant lands
Minute by minute I am slipping away, slipping away, from the real world
Slaughter the rooster who brings in the morning
The air takes like iron, I cannot survive here
But I have never felt so alive!
Make me a willow cabin at your gate
Hold me tightly and I might be saved
I hear the music coming from the hills
The madness rising with it still
Don’t let me go
Back into shadow
Can’t I choose my fate?
I want to stay….
Minute by minute I am slipping away, slipping away, from the real world
Slaughter the rooster who brings in the morning
The air takes like iron, I cannot survive here
But I have never felt so alive!
And minute by minute I am slipping away, slipping away, from the real world
Slaughter the rooster who brings in the morning
The air takes like iron, I cannot survive here
But I have never felt so alive!

O Ye Flowers

O YE FLOWERS
by Dogwood
So you see me
For the thousandth-and-first time
But all that I see
Is the dark, the wine, the death and the light
In so perfect a world
There would be no mist, there would be no tears
But so lies the burden
Of a mind wearied by the traveling years
So bloom, O Ye Flowers
Spread wide the seeds of the old oak tree
Till death do us part, love
Will I search through the leaves for thee
The leaves for thee
I know the dark calls you
Its wine so divine to ignore
Your eyes frozen open
Replaying the pain to a different score
Though your soul hardly knows you,
Such a deep instinct to betray
Just know that I love you
Though with each passing day it gets harder to say
So bloom, O Ye Flowers
Spread wide the seeds of the old oak tree
Till death do us part, love
Will I search through the leaves for thee
The leaves for thee
The truth holds me fast, that my words go unspoken
The gold of my armour is cast,
Though it lies now shattered and broken before thee
Broken before thee
So bloom, O Ye Flowers
Spread wide the seeds of the old oak tree
Till death do us part, love
Will I search through the leaves for thee
O my sweet nymph of the grove, do you remember
How you and I would lay beneath the branches green?
Your eyes are the wilds that my heart clings to
When my courage fails me….

Once

ONCE
by Dogwood
I see her dancing cold a naked in the winter
Divinely shining, mourning like a falling star
They tell me I was once immortal
Once, I never knew what it was like to die
Now I dream of harpies screaming at the dark end of the road
How can I be so human now?
Once a whirlwind, a lightning, now heavy stone
Mirror, mirror of me, what have I become?
I am the last, the most unlucky one
She stands on the other side of the river
“Let go, and I am yours,” she says, and I shiver….

PEARL’S SONG
by Dogwood
Beautiful woman
Full thighed, heavy-lidded
Asking me if I will come towards her
And in a perfect world, I know I would
She is wisdom, she is beauty
She is everything I ever saw inside me
That I never knew how to claim was mine
And it’s a cold, cold heart she feeds
Like a petal touched by fire
She the twisting sword, and I the broken mirror
It’s a life, and a life at that
I am not angry
Not as deeply as I seem to be
Though I hide it, she knows it is out of fear
They whisper to me every time she’s near
The silk of night falls
Her eyes close
And I cannot hold the storm inside of me
And it’s a cold, cold heart she feeds
Like a petal touched by fire
She the twisting sword, and I the broken mirror
It’s a life, and a life at that
I see her dancing
If I dance with her,
Will the gods show mercy to us, feed our hunger?
The strong as steel are as fragile as they seem
And in the stars I leave my coldness
Turn to the leaping fires of love
The Earth turns, the sky burns,
And all I have left is you
All I have left is you….

Monster Hide

MONSTER HIDE
by Dogwood
They call me a horror
Whispered between bedsheets, in a bedlam grove at twilight
I am cornered
They say my eyes will drive you mad
Give you a bad, bad, bad head feeling
What do they know
See my scorpion’s tail
A thousand writhing tongues, a Caliban of winter’s coming,
Sharp and bleeding
I am not so light of foot as the airy Sylvan spirits,
Cascading, brightly dancing,
I am of the mud and soil
Beware, you who would be heroes
And test your sword on monster hide
You are destined for greatness
In exchange, we are destined to die
I’ve killed fleets and fleets of ships
Devoured travelers in my maw, ripping tooth and bloody claw
A burning demon
No sympathy, no warning signs
Turn the wrong corner and you’re mine
They’ll cry, “The Beast has caught another!”
Woe betide
But to you, I’m just a story
One more pelt for your collection, providing selfless your protection
They sing your praises
And what am I? - your challenge met
An ancient power smartly bested by your youthful, righteous violence
O wonder, you
Beware, you who would be heroes
And test your sword on monster hide
You are destined for greatness
We are destined to die
I’ve lived long enough to be hated
So perhaps it is my time
No monster is destined for greatness
We are most glorious when we die….

Roll Back My Tomb Door

ROLL BACK MY TOMB DOOR
by Dogwood
In this underground, this cavern
4 eons I have rested
The soil above my head a stifling dark
Too heavy to grown and too weak to let go
Huddled to the root, a grave, a hollow
Inconstant and weary, enshrined in coiling ivy
The eucalyptus hanging, cold comfort for the damned
Pressing in, sediment, keeping covenant with shadow
The cavern, the citadel is singing
Obfuscated to the bell
They laid their curses well
Blow the lanterns out, grave-cloth laid across my brow
So the right words free me now
Farewell, you shades of madness
Stretch your fine muscles in the sunlight
Roll back my tomb door
Sing joy to the blood in the pine
What winds that blow there be yours
What secrets mine
Blessed are the dead at my side, you offered sweet cakes and wine
Now the lights of the River Lethe are fading
Such a rally cockerel cry, oh it took a long time
Now the Devil weeps to lose me
Limbo is a Bordertown, a chronic callous user
When the gods decide to linger, which light do they leave on?
Electric, an explosion, it’s time to wake up now
I dig no shallow graves, there’s much to climb
Roll back my tomb door
Sing joy to the blood in the pine
What winds that blow there be yours
What secrets mine
Like porcelain, like acid, turn another season
Summer’s been in slumber, and I’ve outgrown this bed of soil
With a temperance, with a reverence (irreverence?) - a balm, a bloody riot
When the heavy rains a-lifted and the hallowed voices cried -
Roll back my tomb door
Sing joy to the blood in the pine
What winds that blow there be yours
What secrets mine
Take the shroud from ‘round my arms
Cry Havoc and Halleluyah
My coffin’s cracked and so I rise
Blood in my roots now
In Hades’ tomb, there grows a rose
A seed reaching up to the stars
Writing ink scrolls in the gloom
And there’s no silencing this blooming heart now
There’s only hunger now, crying “Lover, come back down”
Then calamity wanes, and it awakes me
Farewell you shades in my grave, with your pyrite veins
Whistling epithets, whisper you miss me….
